If you notice a lump or bump when petting your dog, it’s important to have it checked by a vet. Most lumps of our pets’ skin or the tissues underneath are benign and not harmful but in a small number of cases, they can be more serious.
During your appointment, your vet will take a sample and look at it under the microscope. If your vet suspects that the lump is benign they will likely recommend monitoring the lump for growth or changes. If there is any uncertainty about how serious the lump is, if your vet sees abnormal cells or the lump is causing your pet discomfort, they will recommend surgical excision and provide you with a treatment plan and estimate for the procedure.
The samples your vet takes can help guide surgery if removal is warranted and in the case of some types of cancerous lumps, help to guide prognosis before the procedure.
