New Kitten Guide
Kittens are such joyful pets, wanting to play and explore all around them! Although they can be quite independent compared to their puppy counterparts, they do need some important basics covered to make sure they grow up to be happy and healthy cats.
Veterinary Care for Kittens
- Your new kitten will need vaccinations to prevent them from getting some dangerous diseases that are unfortunately still prevalent in the feline community. The type of vaccines your kitten needs will depend on if you plan on letting them outdoors or not and the vet will discuss this with you.
- Parasite treatment is very important to avoid unpleasant creatures like worms, mites and fleas. We will give your kitten an appropriate parasite treatment at their vaccination visit and let you know what to use, and how often, to keep them covered.
- We strongly recommend microchipping your kitten and this can be done by our vets and nurses. It means that if your cat escapes or gets lost that they can be reunited with you when their microchip is scanned in a vet clinic or rescue centre.
- Your kitten will need to stay indoors until they are neutered (at 4-6 months of age). This will prevent them straying as they look for a mate, getting into fights with other unneutered neighbourhood cats and of course avoids unwanted pregnancies.
- It is a very good idea to insure your kitten so that you have a financial plan in place in the case of any injuries or illnesses throughout their lifetime. Taking out insurance early on also avoids an insurance policy applying exclusions for ‘pre existing conditions’.
- Nutrition is really important for growing kittens. We will be happy to discuss your kitten’s diet and feeding plan to ensure they are getting the right amount of high quality nutrition to give them the best start in life.
