Adopting an Adult Pet
Adult or senior animals make really wonderful pets. They are generally a little calmer and may already have some training around things like toileting and lead walking.
Helping an Older Pet Settle
At times, adopting an adult pet can bring some challenges, particularly in the case of taking on a pet to help a family member or friend. This may not have left much time to prepare for the new arrival, and the settling in period could be a little longer.
Older pets may be less energetic than a young puppy or kitten but some can find it harder to adapt to a new environment, depending on their previous experiences. This makes them no less of a great choice for a new addition to your family, but means you both might need some support at the beginning.
We recommend bringing any new pet for a visit to meet one of our vets for a consultation. They will give your pet a full clinical examination to check for any health issues and discuss their history and how they are settling in with you. We are happy to make a plan if extra support is needed to help your pet settle in, but often it is simply a case of giving them time and making a few minor adjustments to make things easier for everybody.
