New Puppy Guide
There’s nothing cuter than a bouncy, happy puppy. The first few weeks can be a lot of work (like a new baby!) but their love and affection is worth every minute. As well as the care you give them at home, your new puppy will need some essential veterinary care too.
Veterinary Care for Puppies
- Most puppies will have had a first vaccination before they go to their new home. In order to be fully protected they will need a course of 2-3 vaccinations in total, depending on what their first vaccine was and when it was given. We are happy to have a look at their vaccination records and let you know what is needed, or if you are unsure of your pet’s vaccination history we may recommend restarting their primary vaccination course.
- Puppies can pick up parasites like worms and mites from their mother, other puppies or things they sniff and eat in the environment. We will check your puppy for any parasites they may have arrived with and give them a combined parasite treatment. We will also advise you on how to continue to protect them.
- Microchipping is a legal requirement for all puppies and dogs in Ireland, so your puppy will usually be chipped before they are rehomed to you. If this has been missed, we will be happy to microchip your puppy with one of our vets or nurses. We can also help you to ensure their microchip is registered to your own details and no longer linked to the breeder or rescue.
- We recommend looking into insurance for your puppy as soon as they arrive. This helps to avoid the insurance company applying any exclusions for ‘pre existing conditions’ and gives you the peace of mind to know they are covered in case of any accident or illness.
- Nutrition is really important for growing puppies. We will be happy to discuss your puppy’s diet and feeding plan to ensure they are getting the right amount of high quality nutrition to give them the best start in life.
